Vibe Vault Virtual Mirror

Client: COX Communications

For the the 30th anniversary of the Anaheim Ducks, the Honda Center in Anaheim wanted to create a compelling interactive installation that gives visitors a memorable experience and highlights COX Communications as a sponsor partner. The DXD team I was a part of within Honda Center’s parent company OC Sports & Entertainment, was asked to design and develop a customized ‘virtual mirror photo booth’ installation that would allow visitors to ‘try on’ various outfits and past Ducks jerseys in a high-tech and engaging interactive experience.

MY ROLE

I worked closely with the design team to concept and develop an Unreal app which tracks users with a Kinect body tracking camera, and overlays virtual outfits in 3d directly over their bodies, allowing them to ‘try on’ outfits and jerseys from the past. This app utilizes the skeleton data from the Kinect camera to align the 3d models accurately over the video feed from the camera. Users are able to choose different jerseys from past years by moving their hands over virtual buttons on the screen, allowing for a simplified control system anyone can understand.

Upon entering the installation, users are asked to provide their name and email address into a small tablet. This allows the experience to be customized with the users name, and send the resulting photo to their email.

The other facet of this installation is a Touchdesigner app running on an adjacent 6-screen video wall, which receives the photo taken from the Unreal app using a custom backend and displays it after the user is finished at the kiosk. The app also shows a number of previous photos that were taken by other visitors, as well as an ‘attract’ reel showing what the installation does.

THE RESULT

Visitors have been drawn to the installation regularly, and are excited to receive a photo of themselves in their favorite Ducks jerseys from yester-year. The installation is setup in the main concourse area, and is used for all events taking place at the arena.
