Interactive Particle System

Client: Harmony Wall

For their new office in New York, a client asked Britelite to create an immersive experience on a 55ft LED wall inside their cafeteria space that would allow their employees to enjoy a beautiful piece of artwork on the 70th floor above the city streets. The art piece was designed to integrate answers from employees to a weekly questionnaire in their corporate app, which gave them more reason to engage.

MY ROLE

I created a Touchdesigner based real-time 3d particle system that reacts to the position and movement of people in front of the 55ft LED wall, and displayed answers from the weekly questionnaire.

Working closely with artist Can Büyükberber, I honed the look and feel of the particle system into a beautiful amalgam of colors and particle behaviors that slowly shift and change colors, sizes, shapes and behaviors throughout the time of day, week and seasons of the year.

In order to capture the entire 55ft width, I used 7x Intel Realsense depth cameras spaced evenly apart above the LED volume. I then created a custom piece of software that combines the all of the depth camera data into a single seamless capture volume, which allowed for the entire length of the display to be fully reactive with no dead spaces in the interaction zone.

THE RESULT

To bring this project to life, we leveraged a large scale LED wall, custom real-time particle system software, a 7-depth-camera stitch to create a seamless 50ft interaction zone, 3D printed sensor mounts; all of which were seamlessly integrated onto powerful real-time rendering servers to create a future-forward cafeteria experience.
