Amgen commissioned Britelite to design immersive an interactive experiences for its latest research center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Using Litehouse, Britelite created and distributed content stories within the property that connect people to the science and innovation being fostered by Amgen. Through the use of architecture and experience design, the space was transformed into an immersive lounge that welcomes visitors, promotes professional collaboration, educates colleagues and clients, and reinforces Amgen as a company that is dedicated to the culture of healing people. Litehouse has been used to streamline creative and seamlessly redistribute content experiences at other flagship properties including their HQ Visitors Center (Thousand Oaks) and their Manufacturing Innovation Hub (Rhode Island)
MY ROLE
For this project, I was responsible for creating all of the front-end experiences in this space using Touchdesigner and WebGL.
The main system was a web-based touchscreen app which users could interact with to learn about the various ‘modalities’ that Amgen had created and patented. As users used this kiosk system and explored the various modalities in 3d, a large 40ft 4k LED wall would display ultra detailed renders of their selected modality.
I also created the ‘pillar’ installations using Touchdesigner and custom Arduino hardware. These installations would teach users more about Amgen, and were built with triple height portrait touchscreens mounted to the a building pillar in the middle of the space. I designed and developed a custom Arduino distance/proximity sensor which would detect a users height and then position the content on screen at the correct height for each user (even for users in wheelchairs).
THE RESULT
The 297,000 sq/ft center launch event was attended by executives, researchers, and government officials including Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker and Senator Edward Markey. As reported on the event “The company embarked on developing an open environment setting, designed for staff to share and communicate ideas easier, to enable more efficient decision-making and to foster greater collaboration amongst staff and the surrounding life sciences community. The lobby showcases interactive, visual elements to describe the company’s biology-first approach to understanding disease, and patient and research videos highlighting their focus in cardiovascular disease, oncology, bone health, neuroscience, nephrology and inflammation.”
